MN Suffrage is Long Delayed

A Long, Uphill Effort Fought by Many

Updated August 29, 2020

Suffrage for Minnesota women was delayed through seventy-two years (1848-1920) of organizing and protesting, and then came only with the adoption of the nineteenth amendment to the US Constitution.

Bjornaas, Haakon, 1884-1949.”Suffragette wagon, northern Minnesota.” Northwest Minnesota Historical Center, Accessed August 23, 2020.

The chief opposition was from the state’s large German Catholic population and from its brewing industry. As elsewhere in the United States, the prohibition movement became linked with women’s rights in Minnesota because liquor was widely associated with domestic abuse.

The period before 1900 was a frustrating one for MN Suffragists.

After 1900, the MN Suffrage movement takes off again.
